 CSULB Groundbreaking

Groundbreaking marks important milestone for California State University, Long Beach

This October, the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Hall of Science – the largest capital building project in the campus’ 59-year history.

Hunt Construction Group, alongside architect Smith Group, Inc., is proud to be part of the new $105 million project.  Once complete, the facility will encompass nearly 165,000 gross square feet and will complete the campus’ Natural Science Complex.

Scheduled to open for the fall 2011, the Hall of Science will house 22 research laboratories, 31 teaching laboratories, several large lecture halls and a science-learning center.  Other features will include a marine biology lab, a rooftop greenhouse and a rooftop observatory.

CSULB President F. King Alexander added, “As we all know, science is at a critical crossroads in America today.”  He continued, “We are extremely pleased to advance our campus’ scientific agenda through the teaching and research of our faculty and students - continuing our university’s reputation as a national leader.  This new facility will give us one of the best science complexes in the western United States.”

Several departments including biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, physics and astronomy, science education and geology will use the new space.  In fact, two-thirds of all science courses at the university will be taught in the new facility.

“As has been noted by the National Science Foundation, improved spaces have significant impact on campuses,” explained CNSM Dean Laura Kingsford. “They enhance efforts to attract and keep first-rate faculty as well as enable the integration of research and education and the cross-disciplinary pursuits that are hallmarks of contemporary practice.  By uniting previously dispersed laboratories, faculty, administrative offices and academic support services under one roof, CSULB students will benefit immeasurably.”

Hunt is proud to be part of the advancing California education sector in making impressive facilities like the Hall of Science a reality.  Since 1953, Hunt has completed over $3.3 billion worth of construction across the state of California.

With the newly opened regional office in Irvine, California, Hunt is excited to serve the Southern California market with an unmatched dedication to the right results for each and every client.  The Irvine office adds to Hunt’s other offices located in Indianapolis, Phoenix, San Francisco, Dallas, Tampa and Orlando.
